The Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) is a not-for-profit, multi-disciplinary arts centre: one of the world's most innovative and influential cultural institutions.

Housing two galleries, two cinemas, a theatre, reading room, talks and discussion spaces, a bookshop, café/bar and function rooms the ICA presents a dynamic and daily programme of contemporary arts, ideas and culture. Radical since its inception over 60 years ago, it continues today as a committed proponent of now, a truly original centre for exploration of the new, dedicated to presenting work from emergent artists, film-makers and radical thinkers in bold and experimental frameworks. Entrance to galleries, bookshop, café and bar is free of charge before 11pm.

The ICA is proud to present a solo exhibition by the American artist, writer and curator Oscar Tuazon. The artist creates sculptures and installations that are characterised by a sense of tension. Comprised of both natural and industrial materials, Tuazon’s structures reference minimalist sensibilities, DIY aesthetics and the formal language of architecture.

At the ICA, Tuazon will be making a radical, site-specific intervention in the exhibition spaces. Pushing the physical boundaries of the gallery, the structure will incorporate, penetrate and infiltrate the ICA’s Lower Gallery and Concourse. Tuazon is interested in how the built environment is redefined and redesigned by the act of inhabitation. Drawing on the methodology of Henry David Thoreau put forth in his philosophical treatise, Walden (1854), Tuazon’s structures confront nature and architecture to suggest that a lifestyle can manufacture the space around it. Adopting the structural problems and materials of construction, Tuazon has created a number of works that extend architecture towards abstraction. As structures, his works are fragmentary and often dysfunctional systems, pushed to the point of collapse. Frequently built on site, and without plans, the structures have the improvised, precarious quality of a DIY project gone wrong.

At the ICA, Tuazon’s work will continue a new trajectory for the artist by developing an artistic strategy recently devised for an exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bern (2010). In the exhibition in Bern, Tuazon constructed a modular structure made from concrete and large beams of pine.

Comprised of repeated units à la Sol LeWitt, the structure bore through the gallery’s walls in an attempt to exist as one piece, in six rooms. The struggle for autonomy, however, was futile; the structure became a part of the building and was dependent on it. In the ICA’s Lower Gallery, Tuazon will search the limits of the exhibition space by constructing another structure inside of it, forcing the gallery to adapt and to reengineer itself, in order to accommodate the work. Tuazon was born in 1975 in Seattle, Washington, USA. He grew up in the suburb of Tacoma, before leaving to study art at The Cooper Union, New York. He subsequently attended the Whitney Independent Study Program, and worked under Vito Acconci at Acconci Studio. In 2007, he moved to Paris and co-founded the artist run collective and gallery, castillo/corrales. Tuazon has had numerous solo shows including at Kunsthalle Bern (2010), Parc Saint Léger – Centre d’art contemporain (2010), Centre international d’art et du paysage de l’île de Vassivière (2009), Künstlerhaus Stuttgart (2009), David Roberts Foundation, London (2009) and Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2007).

The exhibition has been curated by Charlotte Bonham-Carter (Curator, ICA) and will coincide with the release of a comprehensive catalogue on Tuazon’s work, published as a result of a collaboration between Kunsthalle Bern, Do.Pe. Press, Paraguay Press, Centre international d’art et du paysage de l’île de Vassivière and Parc Saint Léger - Centre d’art contemporain.

The Institute of Contemporary Arts ( ICA) is very proud to announce it will be presenting Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2010 this autumn. Opening on 26 November and featuring the work of 49 artists across a range of mediums, the exhibition provides a unique opportunity to engage with new practice and ideas from across the UK.

In addition, New Contemporaries at the ICA will explore a range of initiatives including an expanded programme of accompanying events, screenings, discussions and performances, developed to create a discursive and dynamic context for both artists and audiences.

Established in 1949, New Contemporaries is an important and highly regarded annual initiative that gives art students and recent graduates essential support and recognition at a crucial stage in their development through a high-profile exhibition.

Participants are selected by a panel comprised of influential arts figures, predominantly artists - often who have themselves previously been a part of New Contemporaries - and through a rigorous process that is open, fair and democratic. The Selectors for 2010 are Gabriel Kuri, Mark Leckey and Dawn Mellor.

New Contemporaries was originally presented at the ICA between 1964 and 1989 when a series of highly acclaimed exhibitions aimed to reflect the shape of art to come and offer young artists the chance to exhibit at an organisation associated with radical, bold and experimental art forms.
